Traffic violations: The police response
Anybody who walks, bikes or drives in Middleton knows that speeding is not the exception, but the rule, and that cars (and trucks and buses) running stop signs and red lights has become a regular occurrence.
The fact that motorists speed is not new. Many of them seem to think only with their right foot as soon as they start their engines, and a wide, straight and smooth road is an almost irresistible invitation to drive too fast. The City of Middleton has played into those instincts by significantly increasing the amount of wide, straight and smooth roadway available for speeding over the course of the last decade or so. Thus for instance, the City has eliminated on-street parking on one or both sides of Branch Street, Century Avenue, Parmenter Street and, most infamously, Park Street, to name but these.
